During this Hurricane Season, we want to keep you safe! That is why our homes are built to the latest hurricane standards, to protect you in the event of a storm.
Here are some hurricane safety and planning tips to prepare your home in the event of a storm.
Family Hurricane Plan:
- Locate the safest room are area in your home
- Determine escape routes from your home
- Have an out-of-state contact
- Make a plan for your pets, and have cages ready to transport them comfortably
- Post all emergency numbers where you can easily find them
- Put together a First-Aid kit
- Review your insurance policy and keep a copy in a safe, water-tight place
- Have at least one phone in your house that does not need electricity
- Fill up your vehicles with fuel and have a basic tool kit and maps stored inside
- Have cash available in case you need it
- Charge your cell phone and have an extra battery or car charger
- Remove any outdoor items that could become airborne
- Strongly anchor anything you cannot take inside
- Videotape your home and contents in case you need to make an insurance claim
- Check batteries in smoke detectors
Hurricane Supply Kit:
- Water – At least 1 gallon, per person, per day for 4+ days
- Non-perishable food items to feed you for 4 days – look for foods high in calories and nutrition that can be eaten from their container
- Outdoor grille or camp stove and charcoal, propane or other fuel to cook with
- Cooking and eating utensils, and a manual can opener
- Food and water for pets
- One or two coolers of ice
- Clean your bathtub and fill it with water for backup drinking water or for flushing a toilet
- First aid kit, medicine and prescriptions
- Special items for infants (diapers, formula, etc.) or the elderly
- Toiletries, hygiene items, moisture wipes and hand sanitizer
- One flashlight per person and extra batteries
- Candles and waterproof matches or a utility lighter (if no children or pets in the home)
- Radio with extra batteries
- Fire extinguisher
- Bug repellent and sunscreen
- Heavy duty extension cords
