Developments in Tampa Bay Provide Boost to Local Economy

Tampa International Airport: Tampa International Airport is making great strides with its master plan to expand the airport’s campus and double the number of annual passengers. With the goal of accommodating 35 million passengers a year, the plan outlines three phases of expansion. The first phase is underway and includes a 2.6 million square foot rental center near the airport’s entrance, a 1.4 mile Automated People Mover (APM) and an expansion of the Main Terminal. Estimated at $943 million dollars, this project is expected to create or save nearly 9,000 construction-related jobs.
SLV Lighting: As one of Europe’s largest lighting companies, SLV Lighting established its North American Headquarters in Tampa just six years ago and is already planning to expand. The company is expected to break ground this month on a $9 million headquarters and office complex near its current location, and plans to increase its work force from 22 to 42 employees. SLV Lighting plans more growth in the future with a recent land acquisition of 14.6 acres, which they plan to use for two future expansions.
Bass Pro Shops and Topgolf: Big development is underway in Brandon at a new 600,000 square foot retail and entertainment complex called The Estuary. Bass Pro Shops is on track to become the hub for the complex. Currently in its early phases of construction, the future Bass Pro Shops is expected to open in late 2015 and will be three times the size of a Publix store, and that’s not even including the boat store and ponds! The Estuary project is near the intersection of Palm River and Falkenburg roads and is expected to also include several retail and restaurant locations, a grocery store, a boutique movie theater and one or two hotels. The first project to open at the site is Topgolf, which opened its 65,000 square foot facility in December. This entertainment venue offers state of the art driving ranges with wireless-enabled golf balls, event spaces, restaurant and bar, pool tables and games, and fun for all whether you wish to whack some balls or enjoy cocktails on the rooftop lounge.
Brandon Healthplex: In a new nonprofit partnership, Tampa General Hospital and Florida Hospital have purchased 17.4 acres of land to create a new outpatient medical center called Healthplex. Near the northwest corner of Interstate 75 and the Lee Roy Selmon Expressway, Healthplex will be located adjacent to the upcoming Bass Pro Shop and Topgolf in Brandon. The medical center will have roughly 100,000 square feet and will feature a freestanding emergency room, ambulatory surgery center, physical therapy, imaging services and physician offices. While currently in the early phases of construction, Healthplex is expected to open in late 2016 or early 2017.
