Back-to-School Shopping TAX FREE This Weekend near Your Florida New Home
The start of a new school year signals an important holiday for parents – Florida’s Sales Tax Holiday! Happening THIS weekend, August 2nd through 4th, the tax free holiday is a great opportunity to purchase must-have back-to-school items (and maybe a few goodies for yourself, too). From new clothes to computers and school supplies, residents of Florida new homes can enjoy getting their children back-to-school ready while saving some cash.
Attire and most accessories, with a sales price of $75 per item or less, are exempt from sales taxes this weekend including clothing, footwear, wallets or bags (including backpacks), hair clips, hats, formalwear and more. Accessory items not exempt from sales taxes include watches, jewelry, umbrellas, handkerchiefs, diving suits, briefcases, luggage, and helmets, as a few examples.
School supplies exempt from sales taxes must be $15 or less. Items include everything needed to get your student school-ready such as pens, pencils, erasers, crayons, notebooks, paper, legal pads, binders, lunch boxes, calculators and more. Books are not exempt during the Sales Tax Holiday unless they are always exempt, such as religious texts.
Computers and related items are tax free if priced $750 or less and the exemption does not apply to electronics for use in trade or business. Items that are exempt from sales taxes this weekend include electronic book readers, laptops, tablets, keyboards, mouse devices, monitors, PDAs, blank discs, and printers, to name a few. Computer items that are still taxable include items like video game consoles, cellular phones and digital media receivers.
This lists just a few of the taxable and tax exempt items available this weekend during the Sales Tax Holiday. For a complete list of clothing, school supplies and computer items that are exempt, visit the Florida Department of Revenue website.
