Each year, the color experts at Pantone track consumer trends and anticipate the top colors for fashion and design. We’ve seen color trends in recent years vary from bright and bold to warm and rich. This year, Pantone is taking a softer note on color and for the first time, the blending of two shades was chosen for Pantone’s 2016 Color of the Year – Rose Quartz and Serenity.

Rose Quartz is a pastel, warm pink hue that conveys a sense of composure and calm. Serenity is a light and airy cool blue tone that evokes feelings of peace. Together, the pairing brings calm and relaxation to any space.

“Years ago, we used to see blues and pinks mostly used in baby nurseries; however, these colors have come a long way expanding to other areas of the home,” says Stacey Perez, Manager of the Highland Homes Personal Selection Studio. “In any room of your home, these colors add a great combination of a warm tone alongside a cool tone. The combination is quite versatile, and is able to be paired with varying mid-level tones of browns, greys, purples and greens, also joining beautifully with all shades of yellow and pink.”

In bedrooms, pair either hue with soft neutral greys for a relaxed and romantic ambience. For a more dramatic pairing, Stacey suggests adding in some bright accents for a pop of color or reflective silver for a bit of sparkle.  “Pillows, rugs, and drapes with these tones add a soothing feel, and the colors can be used to decorate in numerous different styles,” Stacey adds.

Today’s consumers seek relief from day-to-day stresses, and color plays a large role in our psychological well being. According to Pantone, this blending of color is a challenge to the traditional color perceptions as our society is seeing a collective movement towards gender equality and fluidity, as well as an increase in the consumer’s comfort with using color as a form of expression with less concern for being judged or stereotyped.

Pantone has a number of online resources with helpful color palettes for using Rose Quartz and Serenity in your décor, as well as a history of color trends over the years.
