Highland Homes Partners With USDA in Haven for Hunger Food Drive

Florida new home builder Highland Homes has partnered with USDA Rural Development in its “Haven for Hunger” food drive. We are collecting donations of canned food, cereals and pastas in the model centers in 22 Central Florida new home communities and at our corporate offices in Lakeland. Nonperishable food items will be accepted through August 30, 2010.
“We have often partnered with USDA in the past to get area homebuyers into new Highland homes with no money down,” said Kathie McDaniel, Highland Homes’ Vice President of Sales and Marketing. “This is an opportunity to help even more Central Florida residents who are unable to help themselves right now. We invite everyone in the community to join the effort and make a difference in the lives of your neighbors.”

Experience the Dog Days of Summer Today in Lakeland

First Friday is back with the Dog Days of Summer today at First Friday – Friday, August 6th. Keeping with the dog theme, there will be pooch-friendly activities and contests, so be sure to bring your furry friend when you come out! If you don’t have a dog, that’s perfectly fine, too. You’ll have a great time watching the other dogs and participating in the festivities. If you are thinking of getting a dog, Lakeland Winter Haven Kennel Club will have a wide variety of information available for different breeds, as well as some of its finest dogs to meet.

Barbecue Benefit Raises Over $70,000 for Families of Officers Kocab and Curtis
Posted by on July 23, 2010 | CommentsThe employees of Central Florida homebuilder Highland Homes reached out this past weekend to volunteer at a fundraiser benefiting the families of fallen Tampa police officers, Jeff Kocab and Dave Curtis.
The barbeque fundraiser was held on Saturday, July 17th, at Kathleen Middle School in Lakeland. 15 competitive barbecue teams put aside their rivalry and endured the Florida summer heat to cook nearly 3,000 slabs of ribs which were sold for $20 each. Desserts were donated for sale, event t-shirts sold throughout the day, and the silent auction offered treats such as Tampa Bay Rays box seats and a dinner party hosted by the Texas Cattle Company.

Highland Homes was on hand to offer Drinks for Donations and raised almost $1,000 from water and soda sales. Meanwhile, Highland Homes’ employees Charlie Laughon, David McMillan and Jeff Shenefield were grilling with their barbecue team, Fatt Ashes BBQ, and Project Manager Tim Parker was DJ-ing inside the Cafeteria, where ABC Action News and other volunteers were selling and distributing the pork ribs.

Bob Adams Receives Distinguished Alumnus Award from University of Florida

Fifty-five years ago, high school sophomore Robert J. Adams stepped onto the University of Florida campus for the first time. An avid basketball fan, Bob was competing in the Florida High School Athletic Association Class C state tournament taking place at the university. His team left the tournament triumphant and Bob left with a passion for the University of Florida.
Bob became a member of the University of Florida family two years later and this May, 49 years after his own graduation, Bob is returning to the campus for another commencement celebration. The only difference? Instead of receiving his degree, the alumnus was awarded the Warrington College of Business Administration Distinguished Alumnus Award. Read More→
