Posted by Highland Homes on August 3, 2010 · Comments (0)

swimming pool safetyIt’s summer, and it is hot outside.  A pool is so refreshing this time of year!  Unfortunately, it can also be hazardous for children.  Drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional death for children ages 1 to 14, and a toddler can drown in as little as 2” of water.

To help keep everyone safe, we’d like to share some drowning facts (from knowbeforeyougo.com).

How much time does it take to drown?
In the time it takes to…

  • Cross a room for a towel (10 sec), a child in a bathtub can be submerged
  • Answer the phone (2 min), a child can loose consciousness
  • Sign for a package at the front door (4-6 min), a child submerged in a tub or pool can sustain permanent brain damage Read More→

The employees of Central Florida homebuilder Highland Homes reached out this past weekend to volunteer at a fundraiser benefiting the families of fallen Tampa police officers, Jeff Kocab and Dave Curtis.

The barbeque fundraiser was held on Saturday, July 17th, at Kathleen Middle School in Lakeland.  15 competitive barbecue teams put aside their rivalry and endured the Florida summer heat to cook nearly 3,000 slabs of ribs which were sold for $20 each.  Desserts were donated for sale, event t-shirts sold throughout the day, and the silent auction offered treats such as Tampa Bay Rays box seats and a dinner party hosted by the Texas Cattle Company.
