Building Hope: Highland Homes Partners with Lighthouse Ministries on Next Step Housing

That is why we were honored to be part of the Next Steps Housing project by Lighthouse Ministries, an affordable housing development designed to support formerly homeless residents in Lakeland, Florida. This collaboration was a testament to the power of compassion, uniting our team, our partners, and the local community to create something truly meaningful. We are proud to have contributed our expertise and commitment to transforming lives through this effort.

From Groundbreaking to Grand Opening

The journey of Next Steps Housing began with a groundbreaking ceremony in June 2024, where the Highland Homes team joined forces with Lighthouse Ministries and other community leaders to kick off this project. From the initial design through the planning, permitting, and construction process, our dedicated team poured their hearts into every detail, ensuring that these homes would offer not just shelter but a foundation for new beginnings.

The result is a vibrant complex of five townhome apartments—two three-bedroom units and three two-bedroom units—designed to meet the unique needs of families transitioning from homelessness. Every element, from the layout to the finishing touches, was thoughtfully planned to promote comfort, dignity, and stability.

In May 2025, we stood together at the grand opening of Next Steps Housing, celebrating with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by partners, supporters, and the Lakeland community. It was a powerful moment to reflect on the journey and recognize the incredible potential these new homes represent for families ready to embrace a brighter, more secure future.

The Mission

Lighthouse Ministries has been a beacon of hope in the Lakeland community for decades. Founded in 1977, Lighthouse Ministries is dedicated to meeting the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of those experiencing homelessness and poverty. Their approach focuses on immediate relief as well as long-term transformation through educational programs, job training, and support services.

The Next Steps Housing project is a vital component of Lighthouse Ministries’ broader mission. These townhomes represent the next step for families who have completed Lighthouse’s Life Learning programs. These programs help individuals develop life skills, gain employment, and build the confidence necessary to move toward independent living.

Residents of the Next Steps Townhomes will have access to continued case management and support from Lighthouse Ministries staff. This approach ensures that families don’t just have a roof over their heads, but also the tools and resources needed to thrive. It’s about breaking the cycle of homelessness and offering a path forward. The combination of secure housing and supportive services creates an environment where families can heal, grow, and build a better future.
