Why it is Great to Live in Lakeland
As many Lakelanders know, our city offers a variety of fantastic events within our local community, in addition to being centrally located to Tampa and Orlando and the events and attractions both big cities have to offer.
Lakeland is growing, thanks in part to this central convenience and affordable housing options for those who commute to nearby Tampa and Orlando. Our average year-round temperature is a balmy 85 degrees, and we take advantage of the sunshine to enjoy recreation or a stroll around one of the city’s 38 named lakes, a hike through the Circle B Bar Reserve nature preserve, and many outdoor festivals and activities year-round.
If you’re looking for a new Florida home and thinking about moving to our fair town, here is a taste of things to do in Lakeland and events coming up soon.
Lakeland Food Truck Rally: Mix up your dinner routine at the Lakeland Food Truck Rally, held on the 2nd Thursday of every month from 6 to 9 p.m. Every month, hundreds of hungry locals flock to Munn Park in downtown Lakeland to sample a delicious variety of cuisine that will satisfy any craving. Lakeland’s next upcoming rallies, taking place on March 12 and April 9, will offer BBQ, Mexican, Asian fusion, seafood, Italian-American comfort food, gourmet sandwiches, fresh-baked cupcakes and more! You can follow Lakeland Food Truck Rally’s Facebook page for updates on which food trucks are coming to town next, or visit the Tampa Bay Food Truck Rally website.
Child of the Sun Music Festival & 5K: Take part in one of Lakeland’s most exciting community events on April 11 at the Lake Mirror Promenade! Sponsored by the Lakeland Rotary Club, this FREE music festival delights from 3 to 10 p.m., featuring the sounds of jazz, New Orleans Big Brass, Folk Rock and more from some of the area’s most talented musicians! An array of food and beverages will be available to enjoy while listening to some jams, with proceeds benefiting The Rotary Playground in Hernando’s Landing Project. This exciting event will also feature a 5K race with proceeds benefiting the same charity, and younger participants will get their chance to win prizes during a Kids Fun Run. Cap off the evening with a spectacular fireworks display over Lake Mirror! To learn more about registration or attending this event, visit the Child of the Sun website.
Slide the City: Splash on by to experience a day of fun in the sun with a trip down a 1,000-foot waterside – yes, a slide longer than three football fields! Slide the City travels all over the country and is making a stop in Lakeland on April 18 from noon to 5 p.m. at 228 S. Massachusetts Avenue, near Lake Mirror in Lakeland. Register for your trip down the slide by visiting the Slide the City website!
8th Annual Lakeland Derby: This Lakeland tradition takes place on the shores of Lake Mirror and features four exciting races to benefit the Lakeland Volunteers in Medicine charity. The event will kick off with the swan boat races, followed by ten area high schools competing in the Maiden Voyage Race, and then the 2nd Annual Leaders of Lakeland Race. The final race is the Lakeland Derby Race, which showcases 10 swan paddleboats that are each “owned” by one of Lakeland’s Triple Crown Sponsors. Additionally, don’t forget to wear your best headwear for the Lakeland Derby Hat contest, and enjoy live music, food vendors, and activities for children and adults of all ages. The night will conclude with a spectacular display of fireworks! The Lakeland Derby offers free admission and will take place on Friday, April 24 from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. For more information, visit the Lakeland Volunteers in Medicine website.
Weekly Pub Runs: If you need some motivation and moral support to get back into shape, FITniche, a specialty running store in central Florida, has restaurant-hosted “pub runs” in Lakeland three-times per week! On Tuesday, Red Door Wine Market hosts a quirky 5K through Lakeland beginning at 6:15 p.m., followed by food specials and two-for-one drinks for runners. Pick up with FITniche again every first and third Wednesday of the month at 5:30 p.m. for a Good Form Clinic, hosted at their Lakeland location. On Thursdays at 6:30 p.m., runners meet at The Chop Shop restaurant for a 5K through downtown Lakeland and then return to the restaurant for 20 percent off their meals. Feel free to take Friday off, but wake up bright and early on Saturday at 7 a.m. for a three to nine mile run beginning at Mitchell’s Coffee House on Kentucky Ave. To get you started for your Saturday morning trek, Mitchell’s provides your first cup of coffee for free. For other running events and opportunities in Lakeland, check out the Lakeland Runners Club.
Free Admission at the Polk Museum of Art: Experience artistic creations from all over the world at the Polk Museum of Art (PMoA), offering free admission on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays!
