Living in Central Florida has many perks from gorgeous weather to world-famous theme parks and everything in between. Living in Lakeland puts you right in the middle of Orlando and Tampa, providing easy access to all the exciting fun each of these cities has to offer.
And while these cities are fun to visit and explore, isn’t it nice to know that there are multiple family friendly venues and activities for children of all ages right in your own backyard?
The Great Outdoors
If you’re looking to enjoy the beautiful Florida sunshine, Lakeland offers a number of playgrounds and outdoor recreational spaces for families to enjoy. Additionally, these parks are located throughout the city so, regardless of where you live, there’s bound to be a one just a few miles up the street from your home.
When it comes to all-inclusive recreational spaces, Lake Parker Park is the place to be with amenities galore! There are tons of options for park-goers to enjoy such as soccer fields, tennis courts, volleyball courts, a boat ramp, and even a fitness/jogging path in addition to a playground.
The Barnett Family Park, located just alongside Downtown’s beloved Lake Mirror, features two playground areas for kids big and small to enjoy in a beautiful location. This park also includes a splash pad which is perfect for children who love the water to run around and play in to beat the summer heat. Picnic tables under large trees in between playgrounds provide a perfect, shaded spot to eat lunch or relax, especially for parents watching their children play.
The Sun ‘N Fun Expo Campus is another unique-to-Lakeland location worth checking out. Home to the Florida Air Museum, this south Lakeland location also includes the Aerospace Center for Excellence and Aerospace Discovery which offers educational programs and activities like camps, special events and daily museum visits. The Florida Air Museum has been open since 1992 and features a wide array of vintage aircrafts among other historical tributes and facts.
Publix Field at Joker Marchant Stadium is also a fun venue for families to watch Lakeland’s minor league baseball team, the Lakeland Flying Tigers, play their home games. The season runs from April to September but the field is home to a number of other special events throughout the year.
Moving further south, Common Ground Park is one of the largest playgrounds in Lakeland with all kinds of features. With many kinds of swings, slides and pathways for children to explore, it’s easy to spend hours here. There is something for just about every child’s interest or ability. In fact, it was Polk County’s first “inclusive play experience,쳌 which means it allows for children of all abilities and disabilities to play together.
On rainy days or days where it’s just a little too warm outside, Lakeland also offers indoor activities that are just as fun! One of Lakeland’s newest and most talked about attractions is 2Infinity Extreme Air Sports, and it’s easy to see why! This indoor trampoline park is more than just trampolines, with extreme dodgeball, foam pits, an extreme obstacle course, themed jump nights and more.
Lakeland’s Family Fun Center is a well-known, locally-owned establishment which offers a classic set-up of arcade games for tokens/prizes for kids of all ages. The location also offers a pizza café with a range of items at affordable rates in addition to a play area with ball pit, a laser maze, laser tag and a mini golf course (outside but connected to the main building) at separate charges.
Skate World Lakeland is yet another family-friendly activity which is available Tuesday through Sunday. Kids and parents alike can enjoy roller skating together with smooth floors, fun lights and music that’s sure to make you want to move. As an added bonus, Kids 12 and under can skate free two times each week when they are registered for the “Kids Skate Free쳌 program. The Explorations V Children’s Museum located in downtown Lakeland is a unique and interactive space for children to interact, learn and explore. With features such as a mini Publix Super Market where kids can shop, use the cash register, etc. and an interactive orange grove to show them how oranges go from factory to the kitchen table as orange juice, this local gem will keep your little ones busy for hours.
Lakeland is also home to two different bowling alleys, AMF Lakeland Lanes on the south side and Orange Bowl on the north side of the city, for those who want a little friendly competition. Whether you’re hitting the lanes with friends or taking the family out for a twist on the typical game night, you can’t go wrong with a game or two of bowling.
