Florida Polytechnic University Now in Session; Welcomes First Students
After years of planning and development, Florida Polytechnic University celebrated a milestone on Monday when it opened its doors for the first-ever class of students. As Florida’s 12th public state university, students at Florida Polytechnic University receive a unique education focused on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (S.T.E.M.). From curing diseases to developing the next generation of computers, Florida Polytechnic University curriculum is developed to prepare students for careers in high-tech industries.
The inaugural class at Florida Polytechnic is an impressive group of 550 students with an average incoming GPA of 3.9. Additionally, the first class proves that Florida Polytechnic is a great option for local students with 98 percent of the student body from the State of Florida including these top counties: Polk, Hillsborough, Broward, Palm Beach, Pinellas and Miami-Dade. The campus itself is a work of art designed by famed architect Santiago Calatrava.
Although it is located in Lakeland, Florida Polytechnic is actually closer to the delicious restaurants and local shops found in downtown Auburndale. To encourage students to get out and explore the surrounding area, the City of Auburndale along with the City of Lakeland have purchased buses that transport students, faculty and staff to the downtown areas of both cities.
